How often do you read? What type of reading material do you prefer? Romance novels? Thrillers? Mysteries? I query folks all the time to find out what they are reading. How much value do you get out of what you read besides entertainment value and a way to pass the time?
So we've talked about why a spiritual practice is so important. We've talked about how the world needs more shining lights so we can overcome the darkness that is pervading our country and our world. A spiritual practice will transform your life. I can guarantee it. And you will have more peace and less anxiety over daily struggles. It is so worth your time and energy to carve out a few minutes each day to start this journey.
Now, let's take a look at the first step to starting your spiritual practice. It comes from my personal experience and the experience of many other spiritually-minded folks.
Personal Story
As a young woman at a Jesuit college, I was required to take a course in theology. Well, you might think it was boring. It was anything but. The professor made the subject come alive with all the history and background. I enjoyed history anyway.
I decided to read the Bible front to back. Now, I have to admit I read it like a novel. I just wanted to see what all was in there. And reading it in its entirety is not a bad idea, but if we want to start a spiritual practice, I recommend small steps.
Then I came across these small booklets that came out quarterly. I think they were called "The Daily Word". Each day there was a scripture verse and a short story to show how the verse could be applied to our daily life. Now I am Christian, and I encourage you to start with reading the Bible, but you can apply this process to whatever material appeals to you.
Read an Inspirational Passage Everyday.
When we start a habit of any kind, daily practice is key. It is the same with our spiritual practice. It has to become part of our daily regimen, just like working out, brushing your teeth, or getting a good night's sleep. We might miss some days, but if we keep at it, we will soon look forward to reading our inspirational text. It gives us something to ponder, to work on, and to apply in our daily life.
Lots to Choose From
Now I started with scripture verses from the Bible, which I strongly recommend. There is power in the Word of God. But other sources can be of value as well. There are plenty of inspirational books out there. I am currently rereading a yearly devotional by Melanie Beatty, author of "Codependent No More". Other works I recommend are Joel Osteen's books, Sarah Young's "Jesus Calling", and "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz. Go to the library or your local bookstore and browse through a few books until you find one that piques your interest. Of course, if you like personal stories, you could always pick up a copy of my book, "The Power of Faith: a journey to healing, wholeness, and harmony". It is chock full of faith and life lessons we all need to learn.
Make it a Habit
Just like any habit, if we want it to stick with us we need to do it daily. I suggest picking a specific time, perhaps in the morning before you start your day or the evening when you are winding down. Just make sure you give yourself some time to think about what you have read. Both have their advantages.
For Reflection:
In this moment, what kind of spiritual book would you like to read? What calls to you? When can you pick it up and start your practice?
