Special Edition: 7 Ways to Combat Fear and Anxiety

There's a lot going on in the world these days that can raise fear and anxiety levels. Are you feeling fearful or anxious these days? What topics control your thoughts and conversations? Have you lost your peace and joy due to world events? Fear is the big brother and anxiety is it's relative. The two are closely related, so if you struggle with either of these, this post is for you.

In case you haven't realized, human beings have a negativity bias. This is a psychology term that means the human brain is hard-wired to thrive on the negative. This is why the media puts out so much negative news, because it knows negativity and fear attracts viewers. It's easy to get sucked in if we don't realize this.

This focus on fear and negativity steals our joy and our sense of peace. It also saps our energy by dragging us down to a lower energetic level. Have you realized this?

Fear is contagious.

The media is full of bad news: lootings and fires, stock market drops, the latest mass shooting or Hollywood scandal, the virus and the pandemic, the war in the Ukraine and now the dreaded tariffs. The list goes on and on.

People are buying guns to protect themselves. Others are refusing to go out of the house. Before you know it, that's what you're talking about to your friends, family, and anyone who will listen. You'll think about it at night and ever so slowly fear will permeate your psyche. You will start making fear-based choices. I've heard several friends recently tell me they don't want to do things or go places because they are afraid.

Fear begets fear. What we dwell on is what will manifest itself in our lives. So this post is dedicated to helping all of us conquer the enemy of fear because peace begins within each of us.

First of all, let's realize one fact. No one knows when our last day on this earth will be. When it's our time to go, it's our time to go so why live in fear? Why let fear steal the joy from each precious day? When I used to teach yoga, I would tell my class, "Every day is a gift. That is why it's called the present".

It is a perspective I choose to value each day and not take life for granted. We have a choice to live a fear-based life or a faith-based life. Fear sucks our energy and keeps us back from pursuing our goals, our dreams, and our destinies. We tell ourselves things like "I'm too old", "I'm too uneducated", "I'm too undisciplined", "I'm to -----" you fill in the blank. These are all excuses that masquerade themselves as reality, when they are really fear dressed in disguise.

So how to counteract this pervasive thought pattern?

1. Realize we may have been programmed to think negatively.
Some of us, myself included, were raised in a negative environment. Our parents may have been worriers, fearful, anxious, unmotivated. Yet that doesn't have to be us. We are free to think and choose differently from our parents. It is never too late to change our thinking no matter how old we are. Or how young :)

2. Cultivate a positive mindset.
Begin to reprogram your mind. Start by reading positive literature. Like this blog for instance :)  Write down affirming statements. I use those little yellow post-it notes to remind myself of whatever way of thinking or habit I'm working on changing. It takes time to cultivate a positive mindset but with diligence - over time - we will soon be thinking more positive hopeful thoughts and less negative, fear-driven ones. There is always another way to see things, no matter how bad they seem at the time.

Our thinking patterns wire our brains. The longer we think negative thoughts, the more negative we will become as we age. We must make a conscious effort to think positive thoughts if we want to live a happier less fearful life.

3. Stop feeding your mind negativity.
Pay attention to what you are putting into your mind. Sure, we need to keep up with world events, but we don't have to listen to the news as much as we think we do - to keep up. The news is on repeat. If you missed it tonight, tomorrow it will be on again, and again....

Pay attention to what movies you watch. Are they about murder, killing, psychotic behavior? You don't need to watch that. When the consumer stops paying for this junk, maybe the producers will start making better programming.

All of this is input into our thinking. As we used to say in the IT field, GIGO: garbage in, garbage out. If we want good output, we have to program our minds with good input.

Recent Decision
My physical therapist told me that she doesn't watch the news because "it's so depressing." I realized she is right - it is depressing. So instead of parking myself in front of the boob tube every night at 6:30, I decided to watch the news every other night. The stories will still be pretty much the same. And I can use that hour for more enjoyable purposes. Ta da! A choice to have less drama and more joy.

4. Develop self-confidence.
Know who you are. You are a child of God. You have power. You are fully equipped for your journey. Read positive books. Hang around people who are uplifting, growing, and encouraging. Listen to inspirational and motivational speakers. The more we listen to positive influences, the better self-image we will have of ourselves. You are wonderfully made. You are unique and a masterpiece. There is no one else like you. Don't try to be someone else. Be YOU!

5. Refuse to give up.
Life has its setbacks, that is FOR SURE. But I like to look at these as opportunities to alter my course. Setbacks usually mean I need to change my thinking about something. The Bible calls this "repentance". When I change my thinking, I can then change my actions which will produce different results. Failure is not an excuse to give up. Failure motivates us to try a different approach. Look how many times Thomas Edison failed when he was trying to invent the light bulb.

6. Let Go of Control
This is a biggie. We have to realize - in the moment - what we can control and what we can't. We can't control the weather, the stock market, the government, other people. However, we can control our reactions and responses. We can control how much we invest in the market. We can control our attitudes when things don't go our way like in the recent election. So many people were and still are so - excuse me - p---ed off and they took it out on others. All we can do is vote. We can't control outcomes. We can't control aging, but we can do our best to stay in shape and eat right. Get the point?

7. Trust God.
God is for us. He has our back. Yes, bad things happen but God works stuff out for our good whether we realize it or not. Even the worst scenarios have a silver lining if we look for it. Read my book "The Power of Faith" and see how God orchestrated my life and turned it all for good. We may not see the silver lining at the time, but there always is one.

God loves us and wants the best for you and me which means you should want that for yourself. Every day we have choices of whether to act out of fear or in faith. I choose faith. I have made a decision to never make a decision based on fear. If you are indecisive, ask yourself this question "What fear is holding me back from making this decision?" Then ask God to give you the faith to trust him.

Step out of your comfort zone. Try something new. Connect with someone you want to get to know. See less of someone who is causing you grief. Don't let fear keep you from moving forward in your life and your relationships no matter what is going on in the world.

God rewards Faith. When He sees us stepping out of the boat, He will move heaven and earth on our behalf. We will see miracles happen. Obstacles will move out of our way and doors will open. Sometimes we will even get a sign of confirmation that we are moving in the right direction. Contrary to popular thought, signs come AFTER we have taken a step of faith, not before. When we see life through the eyes of faith, rather than fear, we will have more joy, more energy, and more motivation.

For Reflection
Do you find yourself dwelling on negative thoughts? What are you afraid of these days? What event from the past might be coloring your perspective? What could you do in this life if you weren't afraid? Will you make a decision to choose faith over fear from now on?

I hope this post has given you some ideas on how to conquer fear in your life. If you want more energy, see more progress in your life, and feel more alive, I encourage you to put some of these steps into practice. Love to hear your feedback here or on Facebook or Instagram.

How to Live in Peace in an Anxious World

Peace. It's an elusive thing. Staying at peace is a challenge, no matter what season of life we are in or what is going on in the world. Responsibilities, relatives, problems, world events, the stock market ups and downs, Covid, and now we have the fires in California. There is always something to rattle us, but believe it or not - the choice is ours.

The good news is there are things we can do and skills we can learn to help us keep our peace - or at least get it back quicker - despite unexpected and tumultuous circumstances. Today's post is about what we can do to enjoy more peace and stay centered despite what may be going on in our lives and in the world around us.

The Pull of the World
The pull of the world and all it's distractions and problems as well as dealing with daily life and all our emotions can throw us off-center and make us feel stressed & anxious. It's not the way we are supposed to live.

Then we turn outward for temporary soothing from activities, substances, or distractions but the real key to inner peace is to turn inward. As a busy single working mom, I learned that developing my spiritual life was key to being able to manage my busy and often stressful personal, business, and social lives.

Our Spiritual Lives
We maintain our homes, cars, computers, and bodies, but what about our spiritual lives? Do we make time to nurture our spiritual lives? Like exercise, it is crucial to  healthy and well-balanced living as well as inner peace.  When we are spiritually grounded, we are more able to handle the stressful situations that come at us often out of the blue.

Brother Lawrence was a Carmelite monk who lived in the 17th century. His famous book, "The Practice of the Presence of God" is a collection of letters and conversations on a simple and pure way to connect with God. Brother Lawrence lived in continual communication with God, no matter what he was doing and so can we. Give it a read sometime.

In the same way that conversation is critical to maintaining human relationships, speaking to God is critical to maintaining our relationship with the Divine. Here are some things I do to help me stay connected and I know they will help you too:

1. Start the day with gratitude and prayer.
Before I even get out of bed, I take a few deep calming breaths to center myself. Then I give thanks for the new day "This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it," (Psalm 118:24) and ask God to direct my thoughts and my steps. I give thanks to God in advance for taking care of anything that is on my mind or that I will face that day. I say "thank you" for his help, protection, and guidance. This is what Faith is all about. Believing BEFORE you see.

After I say my morning prayers, I feel strengthened and protected enough to get out of bed and start my day, ready to face it with confidence, strength, and joy. It's a mental habit I've established over the years and it works well. How we start our day determines how our day will go and how we will handle the challenges that arise.

The tendency for many of us is to jump out of bed thinking about all our problems, to-dos, text messages, etc. No wonder we want to hit the snooze button and pull the covers over our heads. The tasks of the day or week can feel overwhelming. It helps to ground ourselves spiritually before we tackle any of them. Don't go out unprepared spiritually.

By changing our morning thought patterns and behaviors, we reprogram our minds to focus on God's presence, provision and power in our lives FIRST. This brings us peace which ultimately gives us the strength and the courage to meet the challenges of the day.

2. Remember that God is in control.
A lot of anxiety comes from dwelling on things that are out of our control - world events, pandemics, the elections, the weather, what other people say or do. It is important to recognize the difference between what we can and cannot control. I was just talking to my mom about this. She's been so frustrated the past few years and I couldn't understand why. Then the light bulb went on.

"I know what's going on, " I said.

"Yeah, what?" Mom asked.

"You're losing control of stuff and so you are trying to control other stuff to compensate. You're frustrated because you are trying to control situations that are out of your control."

"You're so smart," she snapped.

Taking a deep breath, I said "It's true. You can't control when they deliver your meals. You can't control when the repair guy will come to fix the leak. You're frustrated over things that are out of your control."

All of the sudden the tone of her voice completely changed.
"You're right," she said meekly.
"Ma, it's natural but we all have to learn to let go of control at some point. And the truth of the matter is, we really don't have control over very much at all."
It was a breakthrough for both of us.

Remember that nothing happens without God's permission and that God is working all things out for our good in the long run. I have to remind myself - all. Even the bee sting in the pool last summer. Lesson, watch where you are swimming.

So much stress can be reduced by changing our perspective and learning to trust more and stress less. We never know what we will have to face in any given day, but we do know that God knows and that he will give us the grace - say Grace - to manage it calmly and confidently. But we have to do our part and cooperate.

3. Take a breath break.
This is a discipline I am trying to incorporate on a daily basis. Just sit down and breathe. Slowing down our breathing slows down our minds and bodies. It helps us to recalibrate.
When I feel that "rat wheel" pull or feel anxious about some matter or situation,  I immediately start to pray or if I can, sit down and meditate too. I've also incorporated tapping (EFT) to handle difficult emotions and process what I am feeling in the moment instead of ignoring it or letting it overtake me. When we sit down to breathe, we bring our minds and our emotions back to stillness.

Just yesterday, my sister, her son, and I were having a conversation about travel plans. Her voice kept going up and up and finally I said "Let's just all take a deep breath." It made everyone laugh and broke the tension.

4. The Pull of Busyness
The pull of busyness puts pressure on us which can pull us into a maelstrom of anxiety, frustration, and impatience. Having too much to do can exhaust us so we don't have the patience or the energy to be the kind, loving, patient people we desire to be. One of my son's favorite phrases is "Less is more" and it is so true.

We plan our days to the max, leaving little room for MARGIN. You know, like the space on the sides of a sheet of notebook paper. Margin makes space for stuff that takes longer, for something else to take precedence, for a mistake to be made, for somebody to forget something.

As a single mom, I had the tendency to go go go because I always had so much on me and so little help, but then one day I realized I had to pace myself at work so I would have energy left to deal with my boys at the end of a hard work day. I didn't go out with the folks to happy hour. I drove straight home to pick up the kids from day-care before 6 pm to avoid extra fees. I prioritized time with my family over time at work. I know someone needs to hear this. Who or what do you need to reprioritize?

5. Talk to God During the Day.
This is something Brother Lawrence did all thru his day. We can talk to God anytime, anyplace. Really. We don't have to be in church, or in any other religious place. Connecting with your breath brings you into the presence of God.

The problem is we rarely think about our breath because our heads are so preoccupied with everything else. It is a habit we can develop, just like talking to our spouse or significant other. I have learned to take a pause break after each activity, instead of rushing right from one thing to another on auto-pilot like I used to do.

I go for a walk, have a cup of tea, or just pause to breath and ask for direction. I ask God what should I do next and then I listen.

Personal Story
Due to the cold weather, I haven't been out much lately. Today, I went to the library to pick up some books, and then sat there in the car debating what to for lunch. Thai food? Chinese food? With no clear answer, I headed home waiting for direction. As I was driving, I remembered the empanadas I had made and then I knew what I wanted for lunch. Home it was. We don't have to nor is it good to run on auto-pilot. Stop and think. What do I really want to do next?

When I feel the prick of unease, I listen. When I feel that still small voice warn me, I listen. We need to keep the lines of communication open so we can receive the guidance God is sending us. It could be for direction, protection, or decision-making, but we have to tune in.

6. Do something kind for someone else.
When we take our minds off ourselves and our problems, this allows God to step in and assist. When we are constantly thinking about what is next on our agenda or worrying about stuff, God takes a seat and says "Go ahead. Knock yourself out". God wants to help us. Sometimes we just have to stop and go help somebody else.

Last week, for example, I was feeling frustrated dealing with two laptops that both had major problems, a faulty new dryer, some unknown stomach pains and software issues with OneDrive and Office. What did I do? I picked up the phone and called my elderly mother in Texas and helped her with some of her financial concerns. I felt better and so did she. When you are at wit's end, stop, and reach out to be a blessing to someone else. There is always someone in need of a call, a smile, a word of encouragement, a card or a gift. Just listen to the gentle inner prompting and you'll be surprised at what you'll hear.

7. Call on Jesus
Now we all like to think we can handle everything ourselves. But - some things require the supernatural hand of God. It's when you feel like throwing up your hands in resignation. When things seem insurmountable or unfair and you don't know what to do next, there is a simple act we can do and that is call on Jesus.

I've learned there is great power in simply uttering the precious name of Jesus. "Jesus, help me." is a powerful plea. Try it and see. Immediate peace will flood your being. Jesus is the next level of connection with God. Jesus is peace. Real peace. Peace you cannot get from the world or from yoga class.

The Greatest Gift

Think back for a moment on the greatest gift you have ever received. How did it feel when you saw it? Did you want to run and tell everyone you knew? Did it make you want to jump for joy? Did it make you feel loved a whole lot?

Yes, that is how a great gift makes you feel - like your heart is bursting with joy. Like you want to share it with the whole wide world. That is how I feel and why I write this blog about faith. We all have gifts and talents to share with one another and mine is the gift of Faith: to help others see the light of the world and to believe.

Come with me a moment to that silent night so very long ago when Christ came into the world.

Picture the manger scene. Draw near to the virgin mother, Mary, holding her precious new-born baby. Sense the joy that she must have felt. Enjoy the awe and wonder Joseph must have felt as he watched the shepherds, angels, and wise men come to pay homage to their son. Hear the angels singing and announcing the birth of the Messiah and proclaiming "Joy to the World". Imagine the amazement of the shepherds as they watched the scene before them. Feel the anticipation of the wise men who traveled such a great distance to honor and bring gifts to the Christ-child.

Jesus is the greatest gift humanity has ever been given. He wasn't just a prophet and a teacher, nor was he just a man. He was and is God incarnate - God put on flesh to come down to earth so we could know, see and touch Him. Let's look back at history a minute to see why God sent Jesus to this earth.

First, we have to understand two things:
1) how holy God is and
2) how much he yearns to have a relationship with us.

But there is one thing that gets in the way of any relationship and that is sin. So God gave us the Ten Commandments to help us to live holy lives but that didn't work.  How many of us have told a lie?  Stolen something? Been jealous or envious? Every sin is equal in the eyes of God and the wages of sin is death. This is why in the Old Testament they used to sacrifice animals - to cleanse the people from their sins. But that didn't work either.

Finally God decided He had to make a trip to earth in human form and so Jesus was born, a baby in a manger in the tiny town of Bethlehem. God  knew what that would mean - sacrifice, suffering, and ultimately death on a cross. How many of us would send our children on such a mission?

Many in this world are confused about "God". God is just one name for the all powerful, creative, loving, energy that created and controls the Universe. That's my best explanation in those terms, but if you truly want to know who God is, look at Jesus. Listen to what he says and watch what He does. Jesus came to earth to show us who God is and to teach and empower us to live holier lives. Jesus was and is the one and only Son of God who came to earth to set us free both spiritually and emotionally. He came to heal the broken-hearted and set the captives free.

Aren't we all captives in some way? Who among us is not in bondage to something? To the pursuit of wealth and material pleasures? To self-gratification? To new stuff? To relationships? How about the bondage of our thoughts, our addictions, or our desires? Jesus came to set us free from all of these. "He came to set the captives free." (Luke 4:18). What do you need to be set free from?

As the world struggles to find peace, let it begin within each one of us by receiving Jesus into our hearts. This Christmas, let us be vessels of peace. Let us make time to be quiet, to reflect, to just be. Let us put a smile on the face of a child. Bring comfort to those who grieve, healing to  the wounded, and friendship to the lonely. Forgive those who have hurt us. Let us be filled with joy and wonder. Let us be Jesus to someone this season.

Now I don't claim to have all the answers but this I do know. We can all learn from Jesus. These are desperate times we live in and the only hope we have is God.  If the world would act like Jesus, love like Jesus, and forgive like Jesus, wouldn't it be a more loving and peaceful place, I ask you?

For Reflection
At this most special time of year, may I ask you to consider this question? Who is Jesus and what does he mean to you? Is he just some historical figure or sage prophet? Or is He indeed the Light of the world, the Messiah, and the only hope of true peace?

Here is his promise to each of us. "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:27)

Until next time, may the joy and peace of the season dwell richly in you and may you be a light to the world.

Blessings and joy,

Ariel Paz

Three Keys to Enjoying the Abundant Life

Are you living the "abundant life"? What is your definition of the "abundant life"? Recently, a friend asked the question "What is the abundant life?" and I think she meant she needed more money, but living the abundant life is about more than money.

Jesus said "I came so that you can have life and have it more abundantly." (John 10:10). What does this verse mean to you? I think most of us have realized by now that material possessions and more "stuff" will not bring us the fulfillment our soul craves. Money is great and takes care of many of our earthly problems, but it is not the answer to the cry deep within our souls. What happens when a relationship ends? You lose your job? You encounter a health problem? You make a poor decision? What then?

My Definition
I think of the abundant life as this: a life full of joy, provision, inner peace, harmonious relationships, good health, and personal fulfillment and not necessarily in that order. It's about having more of all of these in our lives, not just more money. Money can only do so much and besides, how many of the rich and famous are miserable and turn to drugs and alcohol for relief from their inner pain? One of the reasons I write this blog is for personal fulfillment and giving back as well as to encourage, educate, and inspire others.

The good news is there is a path to achieving this abundant life but it is probably not the path you would think. So today,  I am going to share with you the three-step process that is promised to bring us the abundant life we desire.

We each have challenges. They may be different but each person, as they say, is fighting their own battles. The key to living the abundant life has less to do with our circumstances and more to do with our perspective on our circumstances.

If you've read my book, "The Power of Faith", you know I've been through quite a lot and, like many of you, I'm still going through some tough stuff. As I often told my mom, "It's always something, Mom. That's life. Get used to it." We have to adjust our expectations and our focus if we want to keep our peace.

If we think life is supposed to be a bed of roses, remember what Jesus said "In this world you will have troubles, but take heart for I have overcome the world," (John 16:33). Despite the seemingly never-ending onslaught of problems, it is possible to live a life of joy, hope, harmony, and abundance but we have to do our part to make it happen.

The Apostle Matthew exhorts us to "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you." (Matt 6:33). In other words, when we prioritize the spiritual over the material, God will take care of the material. Kind of puts a different spin on things, doesn't it?

Here are three keys I've learned that can put us on the road to the abundant life:

1. Do the right thing.
The first key to living an abundant life is to do the right thing in every area of your life.  This means in our finances, our health, our relationships, on the job. We each have a conscience and we all know what the right thing to do is in most situations.

Every day we are faced with situations and decisions, and it is up to us to do what is right. The problem is we often fail to do it for one reason or another.  We get sidetracked by our feelings and emotions, our egos, other people, temptations and distractions, laziness. The list goes on. Allowing these to control us will prevent us from making good decisions and living the abundant life we desire.

When we have a choice before us, one of the ways to determine the right thing is to do is to notice which path is harder. The right thing is usually the harder thing. When we do the right thing, it will lead us into peace in the long run.

Notice the phrase "in the long run". We have to take the long view when making decisions. When we act out of emotion, without really thinking things through, we often make poor decisions. Something might feel good in the heat of the moment because it feeds our ego, but what about the lasting effects of that decision? Take time to evaluate "the long run".

When I need wisdom and guidance, I turn to the Book of Proverbs in the Bible. Or I ask myself "Who in the Bible had a similiar situation and what did they do?" "La condition humaine"  is still the same and people are still dealing with the same kinds of problems they did back in Jesus's day. I can't understand why some people think "the Bible is outdated". It is not. The principles of life and the problems of humanity are universal and timeless.

If we want to do the right thing, it would behoove us to ask God about it. His advice is reliable. Not everyone else's is. In fact, we can drive ourselves crazy asking everyone their opinion. When was the last time you asked God for his opinion on something?

2. Work towards peace and unity.
Peace is an integral key to the abundant life. There are a lot of things in this world that can steal our peace, if we let them. Relationships can steal our peace. Unfair treatment can steal our peace. Our own thoughts steal our peace.

What we often fail to realize is that Peace doesn't just happen on its own. We have to work towards it and it has to be a joint effort with those around us. This is what unity is all about. Everyone needs to be on the same page. We will never achieve peace by refusing to change, trying to blame or control others, digging our heels in, or isolating ourselves.

Personal Story
As a child of an alcoholic father, there was no peace in our home. I learned that chaos was the norm and so I allowed that into my marriage and my dating relationships after that. Recently I came to the sad realization that most of my family members don't care about working towards peace either but you know what - we can't control others. All we can control is ourselves. And that in and of itself brings peace.

One evening while I was soaking in the tub, the Holy Spirit said to me. "Whatever you bind on earth, shall be bound in Heaven, and whatever you allow on earth, shall be allowed in Heaven." (Matt 18:18).  It was a revelation! I needed to stop allowing other people's behavior to steal my peace if I wanted to live the abundant life. This is the importance of memorizing scripture, so that the Holy Spirit can bring it to our conscious awareness when we need it.

I have found that a major key to peace is to set firmer boundaries with others. If I am overwhelmed, I need to say no more often. If I am being treated poorly, I need to stop allowing it and confront the other person. If someone does me wrong, I need to put a stop to it immediately - not let it go on and on. In the past,  I have made the mistake of allowing mistreatment from close relatives and boyfriends. This is both enabling and unhealthy. It sends the message "It's okay to treat her this way." when no , it is not. It does not matter who it is, we should not tolerate verbal or emotional abuse from anyone.  If someone is not willing to treat you right, let them walk away and live in peace!

When we achieve peace in our hearts, and in our minds, then we will begin to experience that delicious feeling everyone is searching for - Joy!

3. Keep the joy flowing.
First let's be clear: joy is not the same thing as happiness. Happiness depends on our circumstances which may not always be pleasant, but we can still experience Joy. How?

First, we have to make sure we have done steps one and two. We are doing the right things which means keeping our consciences clear. We do not harbor bitterness, anger, or unforgiveness. Even then we don't always feel joyful. When we start to feel down, lonely, hopeless, frustrated etc, there is something we can do to feel joy when we remember that joy is a gift from God alone.

God wants us to have joy and he gave us a way to access that joy. It involves turning our focus from our circumstances and onto a holy, loving miracle-working God. No matter what has happened the day before, I start my day by singing and praising God. This is called WORSHIP.

Worship brings us into the presence of God who is the source of all joy. Worship lifts the heaviness that may be trying to take us down. Worship dispels darkness and brings in the light. It is a spiritual principle. I do not understand exactly how it works, but I do know it works. It may be the last thing we feel like doing, but when we praise God we get his attention and he sends his angels to assist us in our time of need.

When we choose to uplift the Creator of the universe, we lift our energy to a higher vibration if that language resonates with you. Expressing gratitude also raises our vibration. Praise and worship remind us that God is with us and that we are alive on this earth for a unique purpose. Hope is restored.

Despite the difficult circumstances we all have to endure, we can still have joy because we know and trust Who is really in control of our lives. God has a good plan for each of us and although the plot may twist and turn, we can trust that the ending will be good.

So there you have them: the three keys to living the abundant life. The kingdom of heaven is within. All we have to do is follow these three steps and most importantly - BELIEVE - that it is possible for each of us to enjoy the abundant life. After all, that is what Jesus died for us to have!

For Reflection
Where would you like to see more abundance? Your job? Your finances? Your relationships? Start by doing the right thing, even when the wrong thing is easier. Choose peace over strife and finally start giving God praise for all your blessings and watch the abundance flow in.

How to Find Peace in Anxious Times

There is a lot going on in this world of ours that can steal our peace. Just turn on the nightly news. Drive in rush hour traffic. Deal with unruly kids. We can lose our peace in an instant and that is why a daily spiritual practice is so very important. Find a time to get quiet and be by yourself and then ask yourself this question:

"Am I at peace right now?"

Pause and listen for that still small voice in the depths of your soul. What did it say?

Lesson Learned
I have learned that Peace is our most precious possession if we want to live a happy, joyful and healthy life. It is actually a spiritual gift yet often, we let life, relationships, and busyness steal it. We put pressure on ourselves to go go go, do do do, buy buy buy, work, work, work - none of which result in the peace our souls long for. Today I want to help you make Peace more of a priority in your life.

Personal Story
When I was married and in a dysfunctional, abusive relationship, I knew in my heart of hearts, I was not at peace. We had two kids, two cars, two houses, two incomes, but I was not at peace - and I knew it. Something had to change if I was to have peace and that meant I had to change. I realized I needed to set firmer boundaries with my spouse. Sadly, being a narcissist, he couldn't handle it and the marriage eventually ended. He was used to treating me abusively since I was codependent and thought he did not need to change. I lost a relationship but gained peace and it was so worth it.

Places We Look
Many are seeking peace in a multitude of places and through a variety of means. Some try to find peace by amassing wealth or attaining a certain status only to find out wealth can vanish in the blink of an eye when the stock market drops. Who and what is popular today can be unpopular tomorrow. The world is just as fickle today as it was in Jesus' time.

Others try to find peace by medicating themselves with food, drink, drugs, fashion, material possessions and endless activity that will never give us the lasting peace our soul craves. These provide temporary satisfaction at best and, in excess, do more harm than good.

Others try the spiritual route. They try meditation, relaxation techniques, mindfulness, yoga and the like. Now I am all for stilling the body and the mind,
but these, too, are only temporary, as practitioners well know. How many times have you or I gone for a massage, to an exercise or yoga class, or to a church service and then, a few hours later the feeling of peace is ruined by an aggravating phone call or thoughtless comment? It takes constant diligence to remain at peace when we try to achieve it on our own. So what exactly is True Peace and where do we find it?

What is True peace
True peace is knowing that we are in the hands of a loving and gracious God. That truth is the solid rock that keeps us grounded. No matter what happens or how bad things may seem, as author and spiritual guru, Gabrielle Bernstein, puts it, God has our back. He is still on the throne and he is still in control. Even though it may not look like it in the moment, he is working ALL things out for our good. Yes, all. Not some - ALL. Remember that.

Every trial is a test meant to move us forward into our destiny and in our spiritual growth and when the test is over and we have passed it by learning the lesson, we will look back with thanks and gratitude for what it taught us. Trust me on this.

True peace is steady.
Sure we may waffle for a bit, just as Peter did when Jesus told him to step out of the boat, but eventually we will waffle less and trust more. Peace is an inner calmness that comes from trusting in a Holy and loving God and in his son, Jesus Christ, the Anointed One.

On the outside we may be buffetted by people and circumstances. We may get angry, concerned, frustrated, but deep within our souls, we are at peace. True peace is an anchor we can hold onto during the inevitable storms of life. We may doubt and become anxious when the challenges of life muddy the waters, but as soon as we connect with Jesus, the waters still. I love the verse "Be still and know that I am God" (Ps. 46:10). The storms will pass. Sometimes all we need to do is be still and let go of the reins of control.

Where True Peace is Found
Perhaps like me, you've tried to find peace in different places. Peace was not in yoga class. Nor in church. Nor in food, sweets, or chocolate. Nor in any of the ex-boyfriends for that matter. When everything around me is in chaos and the ground is shaking beneath me,  I hold onto the one person who is faithful, steady, and ever-present. The one person whose promises I can depend on. I hold on to Jesus.

True peace is a fruit of the Spirit. As you know, fruit begins with a small seed. As it is watered and nourished, it grows into luscious fruit. In the same way, peace is a fruit of the Spirit that grows over time as we experience more and more of the Lord's faithfulness and love. Those of us who have been through the fires of hell know God more intimately. We have met Jesus and we have seen the power of the Holy Spirit work in our lives and in the lives of our loved ones.

Now if you don't know Jesus, you may not understand about the Holy Spirit. Here's how it works. When we accept the love of Christ into our hearts, God sends his Holy Spirit to unite with our spirit to give us a supernatural connection and power. See Romans chapter 8 for more on this. I encourage you to let Christ into your heart today so you can receive this supernatural, empowering gift.

Facing the Storms of Life
When the storms of life threaten to capsize your ship, remember what Jesus said: "Peace I leave with you. My peace I bring to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27). The peace of Jesus is far more powerful than the peace that is offered by anything else in this world. It is a supernatural peace that only Jesus can give.

When the disciples were in a tizzy on the sea of Galilee and the winds and the rain pounded their tiny boat, what did Jesus say to them? "Oh ye of little faith,". In other words, Jesus was right there in the ship with them and yet they were afraid when they had no need to be. Who or what are you placing your faith in today?

Going Thru Storms
Storms serve a purpose. They are to help us grow our spiritual muscle so that when the next storm comes, we won't be as rattled by the winds and the waves. Whatever you are going through, remember Jesus is right there in the ship with you. Jesus promised "I will never leave you or forsake you." (Heb 13:5). We can count on the promises of  God. Unlike people, He never goes back on His word.

Whatever storm we are going through, Jesus promises to navigate us through it and bring us out of it. I know, because, I have been through many storms - hurricanes really - and I'm still standing. You can read about them in my true story memoir, "The Power of Faith: a journey to healing, wholeness, and harmony".  It's a short but powerful and inspiring read. The goal is to stand firm during the storms, trusting that our Lord cares for us and that we will emerge victorious and stronger after it passes.

For Reflection
What storm are you going through, friend? Relationship issues? Financial problems? Health problems? Whatever it is, do not let it steal your peace. Keep your heart and mind set on Jesus and stay in peace. Trust God to be your strength, your strong tower, your protector. I encourage you to read Psalm 34.

The Benefits of Practicing Mindfulness Meditation

Do you find yourself stressing out about the future? Ruminating on some past event? Not staying in the here and now? If any of these are true, then this post is for you. Learning to live in the present moment helps us find more joy because joy is only found in the present moment. So let's learn more about how to do that.

Mindfulness is non-denominational
First let's get past some common misconceptions. You don't have to be a yogi or a buddhist to practice mindfulness, and no, meditation is not anti-Christian either. Mindfulness means being "aware" of our thoughts and not letting them control us or run amok like a monkey on a tree that jump from here to there willy nilly.

First we'll examine what it means to be mindful. Then we'll talk about the many benefits, and finally I'll share some simple steps you can take to implement mindfulness into your day.

Mindlessness
Unless we make a conscious effort to tame and train our minds, our thoughts can steal our peace and our joy. Did you know our thoughts determine our feelings and our actions, often without us even realizing it? Did you finish off that cake or bag of chips because you were hungry -  or - because you really just weren't paying attention?

Much of the time we operate on routines, schedules, and habits - kind of like being on auto-pilot. We are so used to moving fast in an endless race to accomplish more, more, we plan -actually overplan -our days to the max, the cellphone our constant companion, and then when our head hits the pillow at night we wonder where did the day go. Did I enjoy it? Was I really present? Did I make choices that are in line with my values? Was I kind? Patient? If the answer to these questions is no, today I am going to share a technique to help us all with this unproductive and stressful way of living.

Personal Story
I've often been told "You think too much" or "You're a deep thinker" and maybe so, having worked in an analytical career for over 30 years. My job was all about problem solving and finding links, patterns, and root causes. Add to that the added pressure of being a single mom and having to handle everything myself, my mind was on overdrive for decades. It was only until the chronic migraines hit me full force that I realized I needed to give my brain some time off and that's when I discovered meditation.

Mindfulness meditation
Now for those who may be new to this technique, there are many different kinds of meditation. This post is going to focus on what is called mindfulness meditation or vipissana meditation.  In other words, we will be discussing a method on how to train our minds to be more attentive to the present moment, with acceptance and without judgment. It is a skill that will serve us well in many areas of our lives and you can learn it right in the comfort of your home. You don't need any special tools or equipment. All you need to start is 15 minutes a day by yourself. That's it. You can carve out 15 minutes a day to live a life more fully engaged, right?

Meditation has Christian Roots.
But first, let's address the common concern many people have about meditation. It seems meditation has gotten a bad rap, especially among Christians, many of whom balk at the very word.

Some disdain or dismiss it, thinking it is ungodly or against their religious beliefs. I would like to put your fears at rest. There are many verses of Scripture that encourage us to manage our thought life. One of them is 2 Cor 10:5 which exhorts us to "Take every thought captive". Colossians 3:2 says "Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things,".

The Apostle Paul knew the value of controlling our thoughts and not allowing them to control us. We are also encouraged to "Be still and know that I am God". When we sit ourselves down and settle our minds for a few minutes, we release stress and tension and we are able to sift through the cacophony of inner voices that chatter at us during the course of the day. Calming the mind is not the only benefit of meditation.

Many Physical Benefits.
Here are some additional benefits that may interest you:
- Lowers oxygen consumption.
- Decreases respiratory rate.
- Increases blood flow and slows the heart rate.
- Increases exercise tolerance in heart patients.
- Promotes a deeper level of relaxation.
- Reduces blood pressure
- Reduces anxiety attacks by lowering the levels of blood lactate.
- Decreases muscle tension (any pain due to tension) and headaches.
- Enhances the immune system. Research has revealed that meditation increases activity of 'natural-killer cells', which kill bacteria and cancer cells.

There are tons of books and now websites and apps that offer to teach us how to meditate. Some of them can be unnecessarily complicated and confusing. Websites and apps usually involve a fee at some point. Today I am going to share an introduction and some simple steps to help you begin your meditation practice at home and for FREE!

Strengthen Your Spiritual Muscle
Yes, meditation is a practice. It is a spiritual discipline just like reading your favorite sacred text or praying daily. Think of it as sending your mind to the gym.

Just as we train our physical bodies to perform at their optimum level, so our minds need to be trained to perform well. We are constantly barraged by external sensory input: cell phones, noises, traffic, loud music, texting and people talking. No wonder we have trouble hearing from God with so much input coming at us all the time. Just like defragging the memory on our laptops, it is important to clear out the mental clutter and basically do a reboot on our minds.

A Simple Mindfulness Routine

1. Get alone and quiet.
Find a time of day or night, preferably both, where you can get quiet for 10 - 20 minutes. Make sure the cell phones are off and tell the family you are taking a quiet time break. Encourage them to take one as well.

2. Get comfortable.
Make sure your clothing is loose and comfortable and the room temperature is appropriate. We want to eliminate anything that could distract us from being present.

3. Sit in a comfortable position.
Use a chair or sit on the floor, carpet, or a mat. Use a cushion, pillow, or a folded blanket if you like more support. Make sure you sit up straight with an erect spine. I like to sit in half-lotus which is cross-legged with one foot on top of the other knee.

4. Close your eyes.
Rest your hands either in your lap or on your knees palms up.

5. Begin to focus on your breathing.
Many of us only breathe very shallowly, thru our upper chest. Start breathing through your lower belly rather than your chest. As you settle, your breathing will get slower and fuller. Place your hands on your belly to make sure it is rising and falling with each breath until you get the hang of deep abdominal breathing as opposed to shallow chest breathing.

6. Scan your body.
Relax and release any tension or tightness in your muscles. Relax your shoulders, your face, your jaw, your hips, etc.

7. Once you have completed the body scan, continue to focus on your breath.
The breath becomes a focal point of your practice. Observe the air coming in and out through your nostrils. Observe the length of your breaths. Keep your mind focused on your breathing. You will notice many thoughts come into your mind. This is natural at first. Notice the thoughts and let them float by like clouds. As your breathing slows down, so will your thoughts. Continue to bring your attention back to your breath each time it wanders.

8. Resist the urge to keep checking the clock.
If you'd like, set an alarm. The longer you can sit the more relaxed and focused you will become. You will feel refreshed, relaxed, and energized to go about the rest of your day. Meditation is also a great practice to do at night before bedtime. It quiets the mind and prepares it for a restful night's sleep.

As you can see, beginning a meditation practice is not all that difficult. The benefits you will receive are well worth the time you put into it. Like anything else, implementing a regular meditation time means decluttering your life to make room for what is truly valuable and useful. Turn the television off sooner and use that time to meditate.

For Reflection
Are you open to trying meditation? Pause a few times during the day and examine what exactly you are thinking about. Mindfulness practice is particularly helpful especially when having a stressful day. Start by sitting quietly with your eyes closed for 5 minutes and observing your breathing.

How to Find Peace in Uncertainty Times

Nothing is really certain in this world of ours. Everything is in a constant state of flux and turmoil. Just take a look at the stock market these days. It's easy to get off center and start to worry or become anxious.

Envision yourself in one of these scenarios. You've gone for tests and you're waiting for the medical report to come back. You lost your job unexpectedly or your spouse walks out on you. Your child is diagnosed with a serious health condition. As hard to accept as these can be, negative circumstances have something positive to teach us and that is how to live with uncertainty.

There are lots of situations in life when we don't know what's coming next and we are forced to wait in a state of limbo. Time seems to stand still and we wonder what the future holds or if God is really paying attention to us or if He really cares. The answer to that question is a resounding "YES, He is and He does!" God is totally in control and has a purpose for everything we go through.

Personal Story:
God has allowed many situations in my life that have been extremely painful and uncertain.  If you've read my book, "The Power of Faith", you know I've been through a lot of ugly stuff such as: a bad marriage, an ugly divorce, financial ruin, health issues, rebellious addicted kids, dishonest dating relationships. And that was only the first half of my life.

Sometimes I look back and wonder why has all this happened to me. But then I look at other people who are a lot worse off and I am so very thankful. In fact, a better perspective is to say "Thank you, God, for bringing me through all that stuff." Trials build our character. They build endurance, hope, courage, and faith.  After all, now I can write about the stuff I've learned.

We don't know why bad things happen and it's normal to wonder how everything is going to turn out. The good news is we can relax. I know, easier said than done. Repeat after me: God is in control. Just relax. These circumstances may be a surprise to us, but they are not a surprise to God. He knows exactly what is going on. He has us in the palm of his right hand. Picture that for a moment - in the palm of His right hand. Gives you a certain comfort level, doesn't it?

How to Deal with Uncertainty
Now I am not trying to minimize whatsoever the stuff we endure in life but I have learned that learning to wait and trust God in situations is critical to maintaining my peace and joy during the rough patches of life. So what can we do to get through while we're waiting? Here are some techniques I've learned that help me and trust they will help you as well.

1. Set a limit on the amount of time you ruminate on a given situation. Do not let yourself be consumed by whatever is going on in your life or in the world around you. Ruminating sucks our joy and our energy and keeps us immobilized in a state of anxiety. Remember you are in control of your thoughts.

2. Realize what is and is not in your control.
Many situations that upset us are not in our control: the stock market ups and downs, the natural disasters, the fires, the viruses. As much as we would like to wave a magic wand and have all be well with the world, we cannot. The best we can do is to try to manage our own thoughts, behaviors, and reactions. This takes enough energy.

3. Remember you are not alone.
Others have and are going thru the same thing. You are not in this alone. Reach out for support. Don't be afraid to talk to others about what you're going through. I've found that when I open up, others do the same. We are all dealing with something and we all need a listening ear. God is the best ear we could have and his line is never busy.

4. Don't rush ahead of God and take the situation into your own hands.
It could have disastrous results. Yes, waiting is tough, but if we don't wait on God we could get ourselves into a worse mess. God is directing our steps and His speed is usually SLOW. We want to remedy things NOW but God has something to teach us in our trials. I've learned that many situations in life I think are annoyances are really opportunities for me to learn endearing qualities such as Patience, Letting Go, and Surrender. God doesn't waste anything.

5. Trust God.
Most of us have no concept of how much God really loves us, especially if we didn't receive the appropriate love, attention, and approval from our parents. But God makes up for all that. He loves and approves of us and he is watching over us all the time.

Put it this way. Take the love you feel for the most cherished person in your life and multiple that by like a thousand (very rough guess) times. God loves each and every one of us and ultimately wants the very best for you and me.

6. Praise God.
Praise comes in many forms. It could be singing, praying, playing an instrument, thanking God out loud, quoting scripture verses. Praise is good for our souls and our spirits. It takes our focus off our problems and puts it back where it belongs - on God. It lifts our burdens and lightens our load.

Praise also activates movement in the heavenly realms, believe it or not. There is much going on in the spiritual realm that we are not aware of. Something in the spiritual atmosphere changes when we praise God.

For Reflection
What is it that you are anxious about today? Who or what is stealing your peace and joy? Lent is a good time to draw near to God thru prayer, journaling, and meditation. Spend some time today connecting with the Divine and see how much more peaceful you feel.

Finding True Peace

On a scale of 1 - 10, how peaceful do you feel today? What is stealing your peace? Worries about the future? Your family? Your finances? Staying at peace can be a challenge in today's chaotic world. People are seeking peace in a multitude of places and through a variety of means. But did you know we have been given the gift of Peace by God himself and that true peace is constant? In this fourth week of Advent, we celebrate what I believe is the most precious gift of all - the gift of Peace.

Some try to find peace by amassing a fortune or attaining a certain status thinking wealth or notoriety will bring them peace. Wealth can disappear quite quickly if we are not careful. Who and what is popular today can be unpopular tomorrow. The world is fickle. Others try to find peace by drinking away their problems. Food, drink, and material possessions will never give us lasting peace. They provide only temporary satisfaction. Hopefully, you have learned this.

Others go a more spiritual route. They try meditation, relaxation techniques, mindfulness, yoga and the like. Now I am all for relaxing the body and clearing the mind. But these, too, are only temporary, as practitioners well know. How many times have I gone for a massage or to a yoga class and then, a few hours later, my peaceful feeling is disrupted by an aggravating phone call. It takes constant effort to remain at peace through external means.

What is True Peace?
First, let's describe what true peace feels like. True peace is surrendering and letting go of control. It is trusting and believing. It is an inner calmness that resides deep in our souls. True peace never leaves. It does not change with our circumstances or our feelings.

When the challenges of life muddy the waters, we may doubt and become anxious but when we learn that these challenges are meant to grow us up and teach us to trust more in God and his faithfulness. Jesus said: "These things I have spoken to you so that IN ME you may have peace. In this world you will have tribulations, but I have overcome the world." (John 16:33). Did you get that part? IN ME.

True peace does not come from anything in or of this world. It comes from the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit. In fact, it is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. And how do we receive the Holy Spirit? By receiving the gift of Jesus Christ, that's how. Maintaining true peace can only be accomplished with supernatural power which comes from a relationship with Christ. And Christmas is the perfect time to receive Jesus's invitation to "Come unto me all ye who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matt 11:28-29)

When Your Ship is Sinking
When the disciples were in a tizzy on the sea of Galilee and the winds and the rain pounded their tiny boat, what did Jesus tell them? He said "Oh ye of little faith,". In other words, Jesus was right there in the ship with them and they were STILL afraid. Don't we know that Jesus is right there in the boat with us? No matter whether we are going thru: Covid, chemo, crisis, or chaos, Jesus is always with us. Now that is comforting.

Jesus said "I came to bring you peace not as the world gives,". Did you get that? "Not as the world gives." Jesus also promised "I will never leave you nor forsake you." We, who are believers, can count on God's promises. God never lies and He never goes back on His word. Who else do you know that can promise that? Whatever storm we are going through, Jesus promises to navigate us through it and bring us out of it. I know, because, I have been through many storms in my life and I'm still here today thankfully. Glory to God.

Personal Story
After much turmoil and chaos in my life, (read my true story "The Power of Faith: a journey to healing, wholeness, and harmony") I tried many methods, I've realized there is only one way to hold on to peace. When everything around me is in chaos and turmoil and the ground is shaking beneath me, I hold on to the one person that can handle it all and his name is Jesus.

Now if you don't know Jesus, you may not understand how this works, and that's okay. You can call him God for now but those of us who have been through the fires of hell know him more intimately. We know his name is Jesus and he is our true peace.

For Reflection:
So what storm are you going through today? A breakup? A financial loss? An illness? Whatever it is, ask Jesus into your situation. Ask him to give you his peace. Keep your eyes focused on him and not on your circumstances and he will keep you in perfect peace.
