How to Live in Peace in an Anxious World

Peace. It's an elusive thing. Staying at peace is a challenge, no matter what season of life we are in or what is going on in the world. Responsibilities, relatives, problems, world events, the stock market ups and downs, Covid, and now we have the fires in California. There is always something to rattle us, but believe it or not - the choice is ours.

The good news is there are things we can do and skills we can learn to help us keep our peace - or at least get it back quicker - despite unexpected and tumultuous circumstances. Today's post is about what we can do to enjoy more peace and stay centered despite what may be going on in our lives and in the world around us.

The Pull of the World
The pull of the world and all it's distractions and problems as well as dealing with daily life and all our emotions can throw us off-center and make us feel stressed & anxious. It's not the way we are supposed to live.

Then we turn outward for temporary soothing from activities, substances, or distractions but the real key to inner peace is to turn inward. As a busy single working mom, I learned that developing my spiritual life was key to being able to manage my busy and often stressful personal, business, and social lives.

Our Spiritual Lives
We maintain our homes, cars, computers, and bodies, but what about our spiritual lives? Do we make time to nurture our spiritual lives? Like exercise, it is crucial to  healthy and well-balanced living as well as inner peace.  When we are spiritually grounded, we are more able to handle the stressful situations that come at us often out of the blue.

Brother Lawrence was a Carmelite monk who lived in the 17th century. His famous book, "The Practice of the Presence of God" is a collection of letters and conversations on a simple and pure way to connect with God. Brother Lawrence lived in continual communication with God, no matter what he was doing and so can we. Give it a read sometime.

In the same way that conversation is critical to maintaining human relationships, speaking to God is critical to maintaining our relationship with the Divine. Here are some things I do to help me stay connected and I know they will help you too:

1. Start the day with gratitude and prayer.
Before I even get out of bed, I take a few deep calming breaths to center myself. Then I give thanks for the new day "This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it," (Psalm 118:24) and ask God to direct my thoughts and my steps. I give thanks to God in advance for taking care of anything that is on my mind or that I will face that day. I say "thank you" for his help, protection, and guidance. This is what Faith is all about. Believing BEFORE you see.

After I say my morning prayers, I feel strengthened and protected enough to get out of bed and start my day, ready to face it with confidence, strength, and joy. It's a mental habit I've established over the years and it works well. How we start our day determines how our day will go and how we will handle the challenges that arise.

The tendency for many of us is to jump out of bed thinking about all our problems, to-dos, text messages, etc. No wonder we want to hit the snooze button and pull the covers over our heads. The tasks of the day or week can feel overwhelming. It helps to ground ourselves spiritually before we tackle any of them. Don't go out unprepared spiritually.

By changing our morning thought patterns and behaviors, we reprogram our minds to focus on God's presence, provision and power in our lives FIRST. This brings us peace which ultimately gives us the strength and the courage to meet the challenges of the day.

2. Remember that God is in control.
A lot of anxiety comes from dwelling on things that are out of our control - world events, pandemics, the elections, the weather, what other people say or do. It is important to recognize the difference between what we can and cannot control. I was just talking to my mom about this. She's been so frustrated the past few years and I couldn't understand why. Then the light bulb went on.

"I know what's going on, " I said.

"Yeah, what?" Mom asked.

"You're losing control of stuff and so you are trying to control other stuff to compensate. You're frustrated because you are trying to control situations that are out of your control."

"You're so smart," she snapped.

Taking a deep breath, I said "It's true. You can't control when they deliver your meals. You can't control when the repair guy will come to fix the leak. You're frustrated over things that are out of your control."

All of the sudden the tone of her voice completely changed.
"You're right," she said meekly.
"Ma, it's natural but we all have to learn to let go of control at some point. And the truth of the matter is, we really don't have control over very much at all."
It was a breakthrough for both of us.

Remember that nothing happens without God's permission and that God is working all things out for our good in the long run. I have to remind myself - all. Even the bee sting in the pool last summer. Lesson, watch where you are swimming.

So much stress can be reduced by changing our perspective and learning to trust more and stress less. We never know what we will have to face in any given day, but we do know that God knows and that he will give us the grace - say Grace - to manage it calmly and confidently. But we have to do our part and cooperate.

3. Take a breath break.
This is a discipline I am trying to incorporate on a daily basis. Just sit down and breathe. Slowing down our breathing slows down our minds and bodies. It helps us to recalibrate.
When I feel that "rat wheel" pull or feel anxious about some matter or situation,  I immediately start to pray or if I can, sit down and meditate too. I've also incorporated tapping (EFT) to handle difficult emotions and process what I am feeling in the moment instead of ignoring it or letting it overtake me. When we sit down to breathe, we bring our minds and our emotions back to stillness.

Just yesterday, my sister, her son, and I were having a conversation about travel plans. Her voice kept going up and up and finally I said "Let's just all take a deep breath." It made everyone laugh and broke the tension.

4. The Pull of Busyness
The pull of busyness puts pressure on us which can pull us into a maelstrom of anxiety, frustration, and impatience. Having too much to do can exhaust us so we don't have the patience or the energy to be the kind, loving, patient people we desire to be. One of my son's favorite phrases is "Less is more" and it is so true.

We plan our days to the max, leaving little room for MARGIN. You know, like the space on the sides of a sheet of notebook paper. Margin makes space for stuff that takes longer, for something else to take precedence, for a mistake to be made, for somebody to forget something.

As a single mom, I had the tendency to go go go because I always had so much on me and so little help, but then one day I realized I had to pace myself at work so I would have energy left to deal with my boys at the end of a hard work day. I didn't go out with the folks to happy hour. I drove straight home to pick up the kids from day-care before 6 pm to avoid extra fees. I prioritized time with my family over time at work. I know someone needs to hear this. Who or what do you need to reprioritize?

5. Talk to God During the Day.
This is something Brother Lawrence did all thru his day. We can talk to God anytime, anyplace. Really. We don't have to be in church, or in any other religious place. Connecting with your breath brings you into the presence of God.

The problem is we rarely think about our breath because our heads are so preoccupied with everything else. It is a habit we can develop, just like talking to our spouse or significant other. I have learned to take a pause break after each activity, instead of rushing right from one thing to another on auto-pilot like I used to do.

I go for a walk, have a cup of tea, or just pause to breath and ask for direction. I ask God what should I do next and then I listen.

Personal Story
Due to the cold weather, I haven't been out much lately. Today, I went to the library to pick up some books, and then sat there in the car debating what to for lunch. Thai food? Chinese food? With no clear answer, I headed home waiting for direction. As I was driving, I remembered the empanadas I had made and then I knew what I wanted for lunch. Home it was. We don't have to nor is it good to run on auto-pilot. Stop and think. What do I really want to do next?

When I feel the prick of unease, I listen. When I feel that still small voice warn me, I listen. We need to keep the lines of communication open so we can receive the guidance God is sending us. It could be for direction, protection, or decision-making, but we have to tune in.

6. Do something kind for someone else.
When we take our minds off ourselves and our problems, this allows God to step in and assist. When we are constantly thinking about what is next on our agenda or worrying about stuff, God takes a seat and says "Go ahead. Knock yourself out". God wants to help us. Sometimes we just have to stop and go help somebody else.

Last week, for example, I was feeling frustrated dealing with two laptops that both had major problems, a faulty new dryer, some unknown stomach pains and software issues with OneDrive and Office. What did I do? I picked up the phone and called my elderly mother in Texas and helped her with some of her financial concerns. I felt better and so did she. When you are at wit's end, stop, and reach out to be a blessing to someone else. There is always someone in need of a call, a smile, a word of encouragement, a card or a gift. Just listen to the gentle inner prompting and you'll be surprised at what you'll hear.

7. Call on Jesus
Now we all like to think we can handle everything ourselves. But - some things require the supernatural hand of God. It's when you feel like throwing up your hands in resignation. When things seem insurmountable or unfair and you don't know what to do next, there is a simple act we can do and that is call on Jesus.

I've learned there is great power in simply uttering the precious name of Jesus. "Jesus, help me." is a powerful plea. Try it and see. Immediate peace will flood your being. Jesus is the next level of connection with God. Jesus is peace. Real peace. Peace you cannot get from the world or from yoga class.

The Cure for Loneliness

Many people in this world are lonely. Perhaps like me, you are divorced and an empty nester. Or maybe you are widowed or never married. Friends and family are either too busy with their lives, married and too busy, and really good friends are hard to come by. Today I'm sharing how I combat loneliness and I hope it will help and encourage you too.

I have found that developing a relationship with God is the most comforting thing in the world. God, and remember that is just a label, is that unseen energy or force that makes the world turn. The good news is God is ALWAYS INTERESTED  in us! His line is never busy and he always keeps his word.

Would you like to learn how to hear from God better? Now I don't mean in an audible way, of course. God communicates with each of us differently. He already knows your love language. First let's talk about why is it so important to hear from our spiritual Father.

A few good reasons are:
1) so we can  make better decisions
2) so we can move forward in life
3) so we can live the abundant life
4) so we can learn how to overcome the difficulties of life
5) so we can have more peace even when everything around us is in chaos
6) so we can have more joy even during the tough times

First let me ask you a question.

Do you always need someone or something to keep you company? The TV? The computer? Your cell phone? The dog or cat?

Realize you are never really alone.

Although we may feel physically and emotionally alone, it is important to realize this fact. YOU ARE NEVER ALONE. God is always there, but let's just say he is behind the scenes, orchestrating circumstances for his purposes and for your growth. He is waiting for you to make time for him. "Draw near to God and he will draw near to you" (James 4:8).

Calm the mind and the body.
Most of the time we use distractions, food, alcohol, technology, to calm us down which can lead to unhealthy consequences. In this fast-paced world we live in, it takes effort and focus to relax the mind and the body. The first step in hearing from God is to relax the body. Sometimes I go for a walk, a hike, or ride my bike. No Ipod, music, or cell phone. I may do some yoga poses to move out the stress and negative energy stored in my body.

Other times I simply need to slow down and clear my mind. I usually on the floor in a cross-legged position and focus on my breathing and my belly. When we are stressed our breathing is shallow and high in the chest. As we calm ourselves, our breath gets deeper and moves into the belly. I'm trying to develop a regular meditation practice to rest my ever-running brain.

Relaxing the body helps to relax the mind. As the body relaxes, slowly the clutter in the mind dissipates. Then we are prepared to hear from God. "Your servant is listening." I say out loud to get the attention of whatever angelic forces may be hovering.

Cultivate Solitude.
Alone time is truly a gift. When we realize we are not alone, cultivating solitude will become easier to do. We will learn to block out the negative voices that try to make us feel bad about ourselves. Instead, we will focus on relaxing our body and our mind and being open and receptive to what God might be saying to us.

If I want to hear from my significant other or my children, I need to spend time with them. If I want to know what they think, how they feel, and what's important to them I need to spend quality time alone with them. The same goes with God. He is always near. It is we who distance.

Practice passage meditation.
God does speak to his children and he does it in a variety of creative ways. One of the best ways to hear from God is to read a sacred text. I prefer the Bible because God is required to honor his word, not the word of anybody else. It is amazing how verses will jump off the page at me or start appearing from multiple sources in a brief period of time. They can be guidance, encouragement, or answers and it is up to me to delve into them more. I just had an experience with a verse, 1 Cor. 10:13. It just started popping up everywhere so I knew it was the Holy Spirit trying to pass me a message. In fact, it was an answer to a question I had been asking God. Even though I may have read this passage many many times, I had a new revelation which was exactly the answer to the question I asked. Amazes me!

Life is all about choices. If we want to feel less lonely and more connected, especially as we get older, it is important to develop an intimate relationship with God.  Just like any other relationship, it will take some time so be patient. When you start to connect, it will enrich your life and build your  faith and trust that you are indeed - never alone!

I promise you that nothing on earth can compare to hearing directly from the Almighty Creator of the Universe. It is an awesome thrill when God speaks and you hear it!

How to Have Faith thru the Storms of Life

Do you ever doubt that the sun will come up every morning? Some days it shines brightly and others days it hides behind clouds and rain showers. But the sun is always there regardless of whether we see and feel it or not. It is the same with the presence of God.

Lately it seems the weather can't seem to make up it's mind. This past Thursday for instance, it was sunny and bright most of the day, and then all of the sudden I heard the pitter patter of something outside.

What is that?

I sat up and looked out the window, and noticed it had begun to gently rain. Lo and behold, a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky. It was like a colorful gift the heavens were displaying for the world to see and I remembered the promise God made to Noah after he sent the great flood to destroy the earth.

"Never again shall I destroy the earth by water,"  God said in Genesis 9:11.

Imagine how Noah must have felt when God told him to build the ark. Until that time, there had never been rain upon the earth. People must have thought he was crazy and scratched their heads in bewildermint. Noah might even have thought the same thing, but he carried out God's instructions in faith and obedience.

Sometimes God asks us to do things we don't understand. We all have our plans and agendas, but do we stop and take time to ask God if we are headed in the right direction? We think we have it all figured out but then God interrupts. It could be a financial loss, a loss of a relationship, a dream, or even an illness. Sometimes God uses the difficult situations in life to get our attention back on Him.

I have learned it is always best to obey that still small voice and do it quickly, even if I don't understand why. I have also learned it is important to check in every step of the way, because sometimes the plan changes very quickly. Recently, I don't even know what the plan is, but still I follow, I trust, and I obey.

"Man makes his plans, but God directs his steps," (Prov. 16:9)

What do you do when the most bizarre or painful things start happening and you don't understand why? Chalk it up to coincidence? Fate? Have you considered it might be God?

No matter what ordeal you may be going through today, rest assured that God knows what He is doing. God is a good God and He works everything, including the painful circumstances in our lives for our good and for His glory. He says he has captured every tear in a cup (Ps. 56:8) and He promises to wash away every tear from our eyes (Rev. 21:4).

Some of us have shed a lot of tears in our lives, but God understands.  I'm sure God grieved when he saw his creation perish before his very eyes and  His only precious Son, die a horrible death on the cross.

What tears have you shed, dear one? Are they tears of sorrow, grief, loss? Be at peace and fear not. God has the plan and his promises are all true. Just as surely as Mother Nature brings new life to earth every spring, so too, God brings new life to us in our seasons. The mighty Resurrection power of Christ is still available to each of us today who put their faith in Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the Lamb of God.

"This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it," (Ps. 118:24) hangs in my office where I can see it every morning to remind me that no matter what my circumstances, I am to rejoice. Even when we don't see the sun, we know that it will shine again another day and the rainbow reminds us that even if we don't see how or when, God's promises are still true today.

Until next time, choose to believe, keep the faith, and keep looking up!

7 Ways to Feel Less Lonely

Are you feeling lonely today? Many, including myself, are single, divorced, or widowed and looking for someone or something to fill that void in their spirit. Hollywood would have us to believe the romantic Tom Cruise line "You complete me."

The truth is no human being can complete us. Relationships can only do so much: a spouse, a child, a parent - these are are practice grounds where we learn to love but they are imperfect at best. People will always let us down. They were never meant to be a substitute for a relationship with God. When I was married,  I remember feeling ever so lonely  because there was no connection, no intimacy, and no relationship with God. Perhaps you feel this way today.

Only God can fill the hole in our hearts because he is the one who put it there. We were made to desire a relationship with God, but so many of us turn away seeking solace in people and things that will never satisfy. Today's post is about developing a connection to God, your higher power, or whatever name you feel comfortable with so that you will feel less lonely and more connected to the Creator of the Universe.

Do you "believe" in God, but have no idea how to connect with him?
Do you often crave the presence of another human being?
Do you feel incomplete when you're not in a relationship?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, today's post will help you feel the presence of God and fill that void inside you. God does not want you feeling lonely. That's why he promised "I will never leave you, nor forsake you."

It is possible to have relationship with God, in some of the very same ways we have a relationship with another human being. The difference is God is so much more reliable, faithful, trustworthy and loves us more than any human being ever could. So today we'll talk about 7 ways to relieve the feeling of loneliness by learning to enjoy the presence of God.

1. Practice Gratitude
Do you focus more on what's lacking in your life or what's present? Just like Eve who had everything she needed in the Garden of Eden, she focused on the one thing that she couldn't have. It's human nature. But this thinking keeps us miserable. When we pay more attention to the blessings we all have, we will feel more joyful and less depressed.

2. Practice Joy
How does one practice joy?  I have other posts on that topic so you can do a search. Joy is an inner delight. It comes from knowing God loves and cares for you and that everything that happens to you is under his watchful eye. It is a knowing that no matter how tough things might seem, they will work out for your good. Joy is a mindset that brings us into the presence of God.

3. Journal
Now I don't know exactly how this one works, but I do know it works. When we get quiet, and put our thoughts down on paper, God can speak to us. Journaling helps us to get clear on our thoughts and feelings. It is that still small voice that reveals truth and gives answers. We gain clarity about problems we are facing. I have been journalling for over 20 years and I have a stack of journals I'm debating what to do with.

4. Spend quiet time alone
This is key. You know how hard it is to hear your significant other when you're in a noisy restaurant? Well, God speaks to us in an inaudible whisper. We can't hear his voice if we have the radio or television on all the time. We need to turn all the electronics off and just be. God will show up, promise.

5. Read a sacred text
This is a discipline that pays off dearly. Just this week, I almost started my day without going to my Bible reading. Boy was I glad I did. The words jumped off the page at me. This is God's Spirit speaking to us. It's like He is saying "This is for YOU!" But we won't be able to hear from God, if we don't tune into his word.

6. Talk to God
Think of your best friend. How often do you talk to him or her? Now how would you like to have that kind of relationship with God? You can. But unlike your friend, God is never too busy or to preoccupied to listen to us. I talk to God throughout the day most days. Just like any relationship it takes time to develop. Another way we talk to God is through prayer. The Bible says "Pray unceasingly. I think what that means is what I just shared - talk to God during your day.

7. Meditate
Meditation is a hot topic these days. However, there is more to meditation than sitting still, closing our eyes, and watching our thoughts float  by. Christian meditation refers to meditating on the Word of God. Take a passage or a phrase of Scripture and think about it, reflect on its meaning. Ask how it applies to you. This is how we absorb the truths that will help us to overcome the negative chatter that pervades our thinking.

When you start to practice these 7 steps, I promise you, you will feel less lonely and more connected. You will start seeing amazing things and you will know God is with you and cares for you. It could be an unxpected gift in the mail. A special delivery. A license plate. You never know where God is going to show up. But He promises that when we seek him, we will find him.

How to Practice the Presence of God

Do you find yourself fretting over the future? Getting older? The stock market? No matter how well we develop our personal power, there will always be situations that are beyond our control that can cause us to be anxious. However, there is a supernatural power available to each of us to help us deal with the unknowns in life. It is the third component in our series on taming our unruly minds.

Perhaps, like me, you were raised in a family where there was a lot of drama, discord, and chaos. When children are raised in this type of environment, they become anxious, worried, and fearful. We learn to ruminate over our problems. Yet this is not the way we were meant to live and somehow, deep inside, we know it. We yearn for peace but often we search for it in the wrong places.

As a young woman attending a Jesuit college, I was required to take a course in theology. I began to read the Bible and learn about the power of prayer. Prayer is our supernatural weapon to combat anxiety, stress, and overwhelm. Prayer is more powerful than we realize.  When we take our concerns to God in prayer, we shift our focus from our circumstances to the One who controls our circumstances. The result is less anxiety and fretfulness and more peace of mind.

Today, prayer plays an integral part of my daily life. When something upsetting happens, rather than get all riled up like I used to, I say a prayer. If I am on the phone awaiting an answer in my favor, I pray. When the weather report is ominous, I pray. When a child calls and says they have bad news, I pray. I lift every issue, every concern, every decision up to God. I have learned I cannot and need not carry all these burdens on my shoulders. God's shoulders are much more capable. We were made to depend on God.

Praying is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of Faith and Faith is pleasing to God. This is what Thomas a Kempis and Brother Lawrence refer to as "practicing the presence of God". It means maintaining an ongoing connection with God throughout the day and keeps us focused, centered, and at peace.

When we have problems without solutions - pray.
When we are afraid, worried, or discouraged - pray.
When the trials of life overwhelm us - pray.
When the joys of today please us - pray.
When we don't know what to do about a situation - pray.

Prayer activates the power of God in your life. Never think that God is too busy to listen to your prayers or that He isn't interested.  He always has time to listen and his line is never busy. You can talk to God anytime, anywhere. Just as a parent loves to hear from her child, God is delighted when we talk to him through prayer.

What is it that you need divine intervention with? A relationship? A health issue? A job concern? God has your back. God is on your side and when we bring our worries to him, he acts in supernatural ways. Try it and see.

If you enjoyed this post and would like to join our community, enter your email in the box provided. You'll  receive my bi-weekly posts and a copy of my free e-guide entitled "7 Steps to Finding Your Spiritual Path" to enjoy and pass on to a friend.

So go ahead and give prayer a try.  See what a difference it makes.

Until next time,

Keep looking up!

Are You Keeping God in a Box?

How often do you think about God? Do you only think of God on Sunday mornings? Maybe you only call on God in emergencies or crisis.  Do you go about your busy day and not include or thank him until perhaps at night right before your head hits the pillow? God wants to be a part of our daily life. He wants to talk with us, guide us, and give us direction but that can't happen if we have God in a box we only take out every once in a while.

Today's post is to encourage you to let God out of the box and allow him to become more a part of your daily life. You will experience more peace and joy as you develop a personal and intimate relationship with the Creator of the Universe who loves and cares for you more than you could ever imagine. When we live in the presence of God, we enjoy life more fully and we are less distracted by the trials of life.

Think about when you're at work focused on a project, teaching a class, solving a computer glitch. Your full attention is engaged and you are fully present. Or imagine you are a dancer flowing with the music, or a cook preparing a dish, savoring each aroma. These are all times when we are fully present and we lose track of time. God is with you and enabling to do these things.

What about the painful times of life? When you have a hard decision to make? When a loved one is hurting? When you feel down and out? Do you call on God then? Or do you try to tough it out on your own? As spiritual beings, we were not made to tough it out on our own. This is why we need God. Life can be overwhelming. Challenges unsolvable. Situations unmanageable. God is with us in every situation and circumstance of life.

God is all around us if we have eyes to see. Delight in the spectacular colors of the autumn trees as they change their wardrobe. Enjoy a sunrise or a sunset as it heralds the beginning or end of a new day. Listen to the wind, the ocean waves and the trickle of raindrops and the thundering of the storms. God created all of these to delight us and to remind us of his great love and the power of his majesty.

This week make take time to notice the beauty and the wonder of creation. It will take you out of whatever problem is absorbing your thoughts. It will bring you into the presence of God. Allow him to speak to your heart, to comfort you, and to assure you that everything will turn out okay. Well, better than okay. God works everything for our good and for his glory. He wants to make a masterpiece out of you so you can reflect his awesomeness.

Blessings and joy to you,

Ariel
